TIME: appx. 1hr 30mins
DISTANCE: appx. 15.5 miles
BIKE TYPE: Hybrid
The Mounts Bay Route is a lovely ride for every age and ability. Its great for families or those who have not been in the saddle before or for a long time as most of it is off road on the coastal path which is also the National Cycle Route 3
As you leave Lands End Cycle Hire take a right towards Marazion over the railway bridge and through the car park. The cycle path is signed towards Marazion as you cycle through the car park.
At the end of the car park you will join the road towards the Marazion for about a mile. Once there you can cross over to The Mount (but don’t take your bikes as you may need to get a boat back if you miss the tides). There is plenty to see, places to eat and shops to visit in this lovely Cornish town
(If you are unsure of going on the road then you may want to walk parts of this or miss it out – but the views of The Mount are worth a visit)
PLACES TO VISIT: St. Michael’s Mount
PLACES TO EAT: The Godolphin Arms
EVENTS: Marazion in Bloom
Cycle back along the road and through the car park where you will join the coastal path which takes you towards Penzance. From here you can see views of Penzance, Newlyn and Mousehole in the distance.
As you come to Penzance you will go past the train station and in through another car park. The route then joins the road and takes you across the Ross Bridge. (You may want to walk this bit if you are not comfortable with roads).
Going over the bridge you come to the harbour. Along with Newlyn, Penzance is the first secure harbour and anchorage on the coast of the English Channel on entering from the Atlantic Ocean.
EVENTS: Galowen Festival
Continue to cycle along the promenade and you come to Newlyn; the road is obvious, just look out for the route 3 road signs.
PLACES TO EAT: Tolcarne Inn
EVENTS: Newlyn Fish Festival
Cycle through Newlyn and past the harbour, up the hill and the narrow street of houses. On you left look for a route 3 sign taking you off the road and down to the coastal path. Cycle along by the sea for a short while and back up to the road. Stay on the pavement as you go towards Mousehole, going past RNLI Penlee and the quirky allotments on your way.
PLACES TO VISIT: The Harbour Beach
PLACES TO EAT: The Old Coastguard
EVENTS: Mousehole Christmas Lights
The recommended journey back is the way you came. Its well worth returning along the route as you get to see the views across Penzance, Mounts Bay, Marazion and on a good day the Lizard.
